LPG gas cylinders are not available at the government-set price in Gaibandha. It is known that since there is no gas connection through pipeline in Gaibandha district, the only hope for housewives and businessmen for cooking is LPG gas cylinders. But taking advantage of this dependence, the price of LPG gas is going unbridled in the Gaibandha market. The sellers are not paying any attention to the price set by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission.
General buyers complain that the maximum retail price of 1,940 taka, as set by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission, is being sold for 2,150 taka to 2,200 taka. That is, the customer has to pay an additional 200 to 2,500 taka for each cylinder. Due to the lack of supervision by the administration, they are forced to buy gas cylinders at an increased price, almost as if they were hostages.
Housewife Jawa Rani, a resident of PK Biswas Road, said that when the government price is mentioned, shopkeepers say they do not have gas, so they are forced to buy gas at the price set by them.
Retailers are reluctant to talk about the increased price, and even though retailers charge higher prices, dealers claim that they are supplying gas to the retail level at the price set by the government. But due to the increased price charged at the retail level, LPG is becoming out of the purchasing power of the common people due to the high price in the market, which is also affecting their sales.
Paresh Chandra Barman, assistant director of the Gaibandha Consumer Rights Protection Department, said they are regularly monitoring the market. Action will be taken if complaints of excessive pricing are received.
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission has set the selling price of a 12 kg LPG gas cylinder at the dealer level at 1,900 taka and the highest retail price at 1,940 taka.
