Under the “Countrywide River-Drain-Canal, Reservoir Excavation and Re-Excavation” program, the ongoing work of re-excavating the Chhota Singiya-Gowalkari canal under the Chhota Singiya-Gowalkari sub-project under 2nd Charole, 8th Barabari and 1st Pariya unions under Baliadangi upazila of Thakurgaon district through the ‘Climate and Disaster Resilient Small Water Resources Management Project’ under the Local Government Engineering Department. The canal originates from a place called Baromani in Chhota Singiya mouza and falls into the Tirnai river in Barabari mouza. The total length of the canal is 7.5 kilometers. Out of which 7.2 kilometers have been approved for re-excavation. So far, the work of re-excavating 1.45 kilometers of canal has been completed. A total of 7 fish shelters will be constructed in the canal. Once the canal re-excavation work is completed, 691 households and 462 hectares of land will benefit under this sub-project. In addition, through the re-excavation of the canal, water will be drained quickly from the cultivated land during the rainy season and waterlogging will be eliminated, and in the dry season, water can be stored in the canal through regulator control and irrigated to the cropland. This will enable the farmers of the sub-project area to conduct irrigation work at low cost. As a result, agricultural and fishery production will increase in the sub-project area.
