Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) has started its first MD course in ‘Emergency Medicine’. On this occasion, on Saturday, March 28, 2026, an inaugural meeting was held at the Shaheed Dr. Milton Hall of the university. Shahinul Alam, Director General of the Directorate of Health, Professor Dr. Prabhat Chandra Biswas, Director General (Health Education) of the Directorate of Health, Professor Dr. Md. Nazmul Hossain, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, Registrar Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam and others delivered valuable speeches. BMU’s Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Faruk Ishtiaq moderated the program, and BMU’s Dean Professor Dr. Shamim Ahmed, Professor Dr. Md. Ibrahim Siddique, Director (Hospital) Brigadier General Irteka Rahman and others, along with renowned faculties of Monash University, Australia, Deans of BMU, Chairmen of various departments concerned, and teachers participated in this inaugural meeting. The speakers at the meeting said that Bangladesh is on the verge of a historic moment where new doctors admitted to emergency healthcare will be able to develop themselves as competent experts in emergency medicine under the supervision of renowned faculties from home and abroad and provide high-quality emergency medical services to the country’s patients. The number of new doctors admitted to emergency healthcare under BMU will increase every year. Ensuring quality, modern, life-saving emergency medical services in the healthcare sector is one of the commitments of the current government, for the successful implementation of which the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Directorate General of Health Services, Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) of the current government will continue to make unremitting efforts.
The speakers emphasized the need for an integrated system including creating the necessary experts in emergency medicine in Bangladesh, creating skilled manpower, providing training at home and abroad, increasing public awareness, and building the necessary infrastructure.
