Evidence-based medical practice will definitely reduce prescription variation and medical costs: VC BMU

A workshop titled ‘Development of Evidence Based Protocols for Gynaecological Cancer Management’ was held Monday, October 27, 2025, at the Lecture Hall of the Super Specialized Hospital of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU). The chief guest of the workshop was the Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad. The special guests were the Treasurer of BMU, Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar, and eminent Gynaecologist, Professor Dr. Sabera Khatun. The eminent speakers of this important workshop were the Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, on the topic ‘Evidence Based Medicine: Transforming Education, Practice and Policy’; Professor Dr. Anne Kathryn Goodman, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, USA, presented scientific papers on ‘Applications of Evidence-Based Medicine in Gynaecological Cancer Research and Management’; Professor Dr. Syed Md. Akram Hossain, Chairman of the Department of Clinical Oncology, BMU, presented scientific papers on ‘Evidence-Based Oncology in Adjuvant Treatment of Gynaecological Cancers: Translating Trials into Practice’; and Professor (Brigadier General) Md. Ahsan Habib, International Medical College, presented scientific papers on ‘Overview on Evidence-Based Management Protocol Development’. The workshop, organized by the Department of Gynaecological Oncology of BMU, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA, was welcomed and presided over by Professor Dr. Jannatul Ferdous, Chairman of the Department of Gynaecological Oncology. Professor Dr. Fauzia Hossain, Professor of the Department of Gynaecological Oncology of BMU, expressed the vote of thanks. An agreement was signed between BMU and Harvard Medical School to advance the Evidence Based Medicine Practice program at the workshop.
The workshop, titled ‘Development of Evidence-Based Protocols for Gynaecological Cancer Management’, emphasized scientific evidence and professional collaboration. The workshop, organized with the aim of advancing healthcare in gynaecological cancer, will contribute to the finalization of evidence-based management protocols and the enhancement of care and management of gynaecological cancer patients.
Speaking as the chief guest at the workshop, BMU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad said, “In this era of knowledge and science, the importance of evidence-based medical services is immense. This program must be taken forward. Where a doctor will use his own experience based on research data and evidence to determine the best treatment for each patient and provide medical services.” He said, “In the current era of medical science, precision medicine is also a modern medical method where medical services are provided based on the genetic characteristics, environment and lifestyle of a patient. Its main goal is to ensure the right medical services for each patient, including the right dose, at the right time. It is a very effective method, especially in cancer treatment.”
Vice-Chancellor of BMU, Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, mentioned in his article that evidence-based medical care practice will definitely reduce the variation in prescription and medical costs. Evidence-based medical care practice involves providing appropriate medical care by considering the best research evidence, the experience and evaluation of experts, and the rights of the patient. If treatment is ensured in the light of accurate information and research, it will be possible to reduce unnecessary medical costs and variation in prescription, and even the mortality rate of the patient. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt and practice evidence-based medicine by all doctors, considering the benefits of patients. He said that Bangladesh Medical University has been officially recognized as the Evidence Ambassador for the year 2025 by the World Evidence-Based Healthcare Day. This recognition as the Evidence Ambassador is a reflection of BMU’s unwavering commitment to research, medical excellence, and information-based decision-making, and the current administration of BMU is working tirelessly to implement this commitment.
In her speech as a special guest, Honorable Treasurer Professor Dr. Nahrin Akhtar said, “Evidence-Based Medicine Practice is a globally recognized and proven method that can make a great contribution to ensuring proper management, proper risk assessment, and quality of medical services.”
In her speech as a special guest, Professor Dr. Sabera Khatun said, “There was a need to start workshops on Evidence-Based Medicine in the country long ago. Such workshops should be held in all departments of all medical educational institutions. Indeed, the practice and development of Evidence-Based Medicine is essential for the development of the overall healthcare sector. Evidence-Based Medicine is an enlightened and effective method for modern healthcare, the medical profession, doctors and patients.” This workshop, organized with the full support of Dr. Noor-e Ferdous and Dr. Farzana Sharmin, was moderated by Dr. Meher Nigar and Dr. Mawa Parvin.
