Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) celebrated World Osteoporosis Yesterday, October 20, 2025, with the slogan ‘Strong Bones, Active Life – Be Aware Now!’ Osteoporosis is a silent disease caused by bone loss. On the occasion of the day, a discussion meeting was organized by the Bangladesh Society for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (BSPMR) to prevent osteoporosis and increase health awareness. After the discussion, awareness videos and documentaries on osteoporosis were shown. Doctors, students and the general public participated in the program.
Professor Dr. Syed Mozzafar Ahmed was present as the chief guest at the event. He said, “A large portion of the population in Bangladesh is at risk of age-related bone loss, so we need to work together now.”
The event was presided over by Professor Dr. M.A. Shakur, Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, BMU and Vice-President of BSPMR. In his address as the chairman, Professor Dr. M.A. Shakur said, Osteoporosis is not only a medical problem, it is also a social challenge. If we take awareness and preventive measures at the right time, we can protect the future generation from this weakness.
Also speaking as special guests were Associate Professor Dr. M.A.K. Azad, General Secretary, BSPMR; Associate Professor Dr. Golam Nabi and Professor Dr. Taslim Uddin, Executive President, BSPMR. They all emphasized the importance of lifestyle changes, regular physical exercise and calcium-vitamin D intake to prevent osteoporosis.
Associate Professor Dr. Md. Nadim Kamal served as the moderator of the program. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness in preventing osteoporosis and said that osteoporosis is a silent disease, which can be prevented through proper diet, exercise and health awareness.
